Read the guideAn aerobic septic system uses oxygen to speed up the natural breakdown of wastewater. That's the "aerobic" part — an aerator (air pump) constantly bubbles air into a treatment tank, feeding the bacteria that digest waste.
The result is a much higher-quality effluent than a traditional gravity septic system produces — clear enough to be dispersed by spray irrigation or subsurface drip lines instead of relying on soil absorption alone.
The main components you'll see on your property: a trash tank (settles solids), an aeration chamber (where the air pump does its work), a clarifier (final settling), a chlorinator (disinfects before dispersal), and a pump tank that sends treated water out to the field.
Aerobic systems use one of two chlorinator styles. Knowing yours is the first step to buying the right refills.
A vertical tube where solid calcium hypochlorite tablets dissolve as effluent passes. Simple, common on Norweco and similar systems.
A pump doses liquid sodium hypochlorite (essentially bleach) into the discharge line. Less common but useful in higher-flow settings.
Aerobic alarms are warnings, not disasters — but they should never be ignored. Here's the first sequence to run through before you call.

Press the alarm silence button on your control panel. The red light will stay on — that's fine. It tells us the system is still asking for attention.

Look for a dedicated breaker labeled "septic" or "aerator" in your panel. Reset it once if it's tripped — if it trips again, stop and call.

Skip laundry and long showers until the system's been checked. Reducing inflow gives the pump tank time to catch up.

Tell us what lights are on and what you've already tried. Many alarms are diagnosed on the phone — some even resolve without a visit.
